Why Visit Lake Päijänne?

Lake Päijänne and the water routes of Keitele and Kansallisvesi connected to lake Päijänne via the Keitele Canal are the Finnish Lake District at its best. They offer boaters, water tourists and friends of lake scenery a wonderful world of experiences with plenty to see and experience.

Lake Päijänne Water Route
The journey from lake Vesijärvi in Lahti to the wilderness waters of upper lake Keitele and lake Pielavesi in the heart of the province of Savonia is more than 300 km long. There are numerous natural harbours, visitors' berths and guest harbours along the way. The most extensive list of places where you can go ashore is available in the book Veneilykesä ('Boating Summer'): www.finnlake.com/veneilykesa. The harbour information in our web map have been taken from this book.

One of the most popular sights is  the Päijänne National Park in southern lake Päijänne. Lake Päijänne Outdoor Recreation Area Association (web pages in Finnish only) owns 11 tour targets that are available for anyone moving in the wild. You can reach most of the Savonia Lakeland tours tourism services also by boat.

The water route offers other things in addition to the peaceful Finnish nature. There are lively summertime towns and idyllic parish villages along the route. The harbours in these places are popular places for meeting other people. Various summertime events are being arranged in the harbours: concerts, summer theatre performances, fairs...

There are 13 harbours that have been classified as the top group of the Finnish harbour classifications system. These are so-called guest boat harbours. Information about the harbours is available, for example, on the web pages of municipalities and businesses operating in the harbours.

Transferring boats from one water system to another is no new invention. Adventurous and curious boaters travel to new water systems and scenery via rubber canals. The rubber canals are pre-negotiated and agreed upon boat transfer connections on rubber wheels between water systems.
